Important Clinic Update:
Changes to Family Medicine Services Effective April 1, 2026
At Bloom Family Practice, we would like to inform our patients of upcoming changes to Family Medicine Services as announced by the Ontario Government. Effective April 1, 2026, new regulations will change how family physicians provide and document patient care.
What does this mean for YOU?
Many services that were previously handled by phone calls, emails or staff messages may now require a scheduled appointment. This ensures your care is properly documented and aligned with new provincial requirements
Examples of requests that may require an appointment (this list is NOT exhaustive):
Reviewing and discussing test results
Replacement of lost requisitions or request for new requisitions
Specialists referrals
Follow-up questions about medical issues
Requests for doctor’s notes, insurance notes including orthotics, physiotherapy, massage therapy
Important Clarifications:
Prescriptions renewals without an appointment will have a fee (or be included for patients enrolled in an annual block fee program). Reminder that payment for renewals covers up to a maximum of 90 days only or at your doctor’s discretion.
Most doctor’s notes (including physiotherapy, massage and other allied health professionals) are not covered by OHIP.
Why is this change happening?
Under the new government model, physicians must formally document and track ALL time spent providing care.
As a result, many services that were previously handled informally (eg. via email or communication through staff) must now occur within a documented patient visit.

While some services may now require appointments, we will continue to use our clinical judgment to ensure care is delivered in a way that is both appropriate and patient-centred.
